This PowerPoint is all about 'how students learn, or come to know" - Learning Theory.
Currently in the teaching sector the focus is on pedagogy and how best to teach the content or skills required in the New Zealand Curriculum. Very little information is passed onto teachers regarding knowledge of epistemology- that is 'how students come to know'. In my view we have failed our teachers. How can you come up with best teaching practice if as a teacher you have very little understanding of neuroscience, of how learning takes in the brain of our learners?
If education is a three legged stool: first leg is related to curriculum theory (what should be taught to children each year of their intellectual development); second leg is pedagogy, how to teach in a way to enhance students learning then the third leg should be epistemology (related to learning theory). It is these three legs that that support 'education of the child'- the stool becomes functional.
